I remember reading Backlash and being appalled at the systematic way that the Christian Right (Pat Robertson et al) had undermined and denigrated feminism and women's rights. This article reveals some of the machinations going on behind the scenes to create a toxic blend of religion, sexism and politics. The Culture Wars, indeed. https://www.autostraddle.com/i-was-trained-for-the-culture-wars-in-home-school-awaiting-someone-like-mike-pence-as-a-messiah-367057/Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-887530111818728008.post-80285982365307953742017-01-17T18:10:59.258-06:002017-01-17T18:10:59.258-06:00Check out this article. It really connects the dots between leaders like Dobson, Eldredge, the glorification of (and justification of) militarism ("God is Pro-War") and toxic masculinity (not to mention warping of scripture), and the way they made the Gender Gospel standard in much of the USA ... and how that paved the way for Trump."<br />In Donald Trump, they have found the leader they have been looking for." Sad and concerning. http://religionandpolitics.org/2017/01/17/donald-trump-and-militant-evangelical-masculinity/<br />Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-887530111818728008.post-16977396514891231642016-11-08T23:59:26.243-06:002016-11-08T23:59:26.243-06:00A raw and powerful post. I commend to you the One Billion Rising movement. 6 billion humans. 3 billion female humans. 1 billion women and girls affected by male-pattern violence, which impinges on their power to protect their children, and their non-violent men. 20 years before Gothard and Phillips and Driscoll et al finally got fried for sexual abuse, I was waving warning flags, knowing that Christianized misogyny, no matter how spiritualized, no matter how many co-opted women they programme to champion the cause, no matter how much they truly believe God is their personal henchman - will be the agar for abuse. I keep thinking things will improve as awareness is raised .... but Nagmeh's treatment shows the sexism is indoctrinated and entrenched. The rise of the blowhard Trump-et case in point. Tonight is a good night to remember that we are citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, as you wrote - and to turn our vision to Jesus Christ once again, his selflessness on the Cross, his compassionate and honouring treatment of women and people of other cultures, of the poor and sick and marginalized. A difficult time indeed when, as you wrote, in a punchy final line - that the Trump-et reminds too many of their abusers. It is a perfect time for us to fix our eyes on Jesus. A beautiful, beautiful vision of grace and truth and wisdom, in a messed up world. Roxanne, thank you for speaking out so bravely. You go, girl.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
